Why Is Cage Placement More Important in Summer? Sunlight, Airflow, and Temperature Balance

  1. Direct Exposure to Sunlight
Placing the cage directly in front of a sunny window or in an open area such as a balcony can cause the bird to overheat. Temperature balance is extremely important for budgerigars; temperatures above 30°C pose a risk for them. Intense midday sunlight not only raises the air temperature but also stresses the bird. Light should be filtered with curtains or sheer fabric.

  2. The Danger of Drafts
Windows opened for cooling or running fans in summer may create drafts in the bird’s environment. Budgerigars can easily become ill from these sudden air changes. The cage should not be placed where the breeze blows directly on it but rather in a corner that allows air circulation within the room. To prevent drafts, windows should be left slightly open on one side instead of cross-ventilated.

  3. Heat Buildup in Enclosed Areas
If the cage is placed in a closed, unventilated corner, the trapped heat can make it difficult for the bird to breathe. Cages squeezed between curtains, furniture, or closets can become very dangerous during summer. There must always be air circulation around the cage.

  4. Maintaining Humidity and Temperature Balance
Along with higher summer temperatures, dry air becomes a serious problem. Humidity levels in the room where the cage is located should be monitored; if necessary, place a small bowl of water or use a humidifier to increase moisture. At the same time, the cage should never be positioned directly opposite air conditioners or heat sources.

  5. Cage Height
Since hot air rises, the height of the cage placement matters. Keeping the cage too high (such as on top of a wardrobe) can increase the temperature inside. Positioning the cage at eye level or slightly lower is ideal. The surface it rests on should also be stable and non-slippery.

  6. Adjusting Light According to the Time of Day
Keeping the cage in complete darkness or continuous brightness all day is harmful. The cage should be arranged to mimic the natural rhythm of daylight: exposure to morning light is beneficial, but harsh midday sunlight must be blocked. For light-sensitive birds, curtains that regulate brightness can be helpful.

Conclusion:
Cage placement directly affects the health, psychology, and behavior of budgerigars. Considering the rising temperatures in summer, your bird’s cage should be located in a well-ventilated area that is shaded but not dark, free from drafts, and not overly hot. Remember: even a small change in location can greatly improve your budgerigar’s comfort and well-being.
