Keeping a Parrot at Home: Everything You Need to Know, From Cage Selection to Daily Routines

I. Cage Selection: Your Parrot's Home

The cage is where your parrot will spend most of its life, so your choice is critically important.

1. Size and Shape

  • Size Priority: The cage must be large enough for your parrot to fully spread its wings and move around comfortably. As a general rule, the width of the cage should be at least 2-3 times your bird's wingspan. Remember, the bigger, the better.

  • Shape: Square or rectangular cages are always best. Round or cylindrical cages can cause disorientation and make parrots feel insecure.

2. Material and Safety

  • Material: Stainless steel cages are the safest and most durable option. If you opt for less expensive iron cages, ensure they are coated with non-toxic paints (free from zinc and lead).

  • Doors and Locks: Parrots are intelligent; make sure the cage doors have secure locks that they cannot easily open.

3. Cage Placement

  • Social Area: Place the cage in a social area of the house, but where there are no direct drafts or direct sunlight.

  • Caution with Kitchens: Never place the cage in the kitchen. Cooking fumes, aerosol sprays, and especially vapors released from overheated non-stick (Teflon) surfaces can be rapidly fatal to parrots.

  • Sense of Security: Having the back of the cage against a wall helps your parrot feel more secure.

  • Sense of Security: Having the back of the cage against a wall helps your parrot feel more secure.

II. Cage Setup and Enrichment

The inside of the cage should be set up to support physical and mental stimulation.

  • Perches: Use various perches of different thicknesses and natural materials (like tree branches). This protects foot health and helps trim their nails naturally. Do not position all perches at the same height.

  • Food and Water Bowls: Wash and refresh the food and water bowls daily. Place them in spots where your bird will not defecate into them.

  • Toys and Foraging: Parrots can develop behavioral problems like feather plucking when bored. Include a variety of toys, such as chewing toys, puzzle feeders, and swings. Rotate the toys regularly to prevent boredom and keep them engaged.

III. Daily Routines and Care

A consistent daily routine maintains your parrot's balance and happiness.

1. Cleaning and Hygiene

  • Daily: Change the liner paper/tray at the bottom of the cage every day and wash the food/water bowls.

  • Weekly: Deep clean and disinfect the cage itself, perches, and all accessories once a week with a pet-safe cleaner (like diluted white vinegar).

  • Bathing: Most parrots love to bathe. Promote regular bathing for feather health by offering a bath dish or gently misting them with water.

2. Nutrition and Diet

  • Primary Diet: The main part of the diet should consist of high-quality pellet food. Seeds should only be given as limited treats due to their high-fat content.

  • Fresh Foods: Enrich the diet with fresh fruits and vegetables (especially dark leafy greens). Never give avocado, chocolate, alcohol, or caffeine products.

  • Foraging: Encouraging natural foraging behavior is crucial for your parrot's mental well-being. Keep them busy by hiding food or using foraging toys.

3. Socialization and Exercise

  • Out-of-Cage Time: Provide your parrot with the opportunity to fly, climb, and interact with you for at least 1–2 hours daily under supervision outside the cage. This is critical for physical exercise and mental stimulation.

  • Interaction: Talk to, sing to, or do simple training sessions with your parrot. This strengthens your bond.

4. Sleep

  • Uninterrupted Sleep: Parrots generally require 10 to 12 hours of uninterrupted and dark sleep to rest and reduce stress levels. Cover the cage with a dark yet breathable cover at night to create a calm sleeping environment.
